Hiking
With 250 km of signposted hiking trails over the mountains, across the gorges and through the forests, the region really is a paradise for nature lovers. Inquisitive hikers can be seen walking along the themed trails against the imposing mountain backdrop, and foodies can choose one of three culinary trails, which allow you to dine as you savour the natural wonders of the area. The historic Pinut via ferrata is enticing as a particular challenge. And finally, the Cauma, Cresta and Laax mountain lakes are a great place to cool down.
Family
Flims-Laax is a holiday region for the whole family. While dad is racing downhill with the mountain bike, the kids are enjoying themselves in the petting zoo or on one of the many playgrounds. The numerous barbecue areas on the hiking routes suitable for children make the family day out just perfect. Of course you can also enjoy a meal in one of the family-friendly scenic restaurants. And: the bathing lakes are always an attraction for big and small alike.
Culture
Flims-Laax has something to offer inquisitive minds and those interested in culture. In the surrounding area different concerts and museums invite you to listen and wonder. The architectural gem ''The Yellow House'' is well-known far beyond the border. Should you prefer traditional building styles you can dip deep into the history of Flims or Laax during a village tour. You can turn the wheel of time even further back in the Parc la Mutta. The mystical megaliths have been standing in Falera since the Bronze Age.
Climbing
Historic ''Pinut'' via ferrata
''Pinut'' is the name of the imposing terrace halfway up to the Flimserstein. In times gone by, it was used for grazing livestock and growing wild hay. As its name suggests, it was already wooded back then as the word Pinut derived from the Romansh word ''pegn'' meaning spruce tree. The Pinut is Switzerland's oldest existing via ferrata. The first written reference to it was in 1739. This historic rock path has existed in its current form since 1907. It lies above Fidaz and runs across the Pinut and Pardatsch, over steep rock bands and grassy slopes to Flimserstein. The via ferrata has been renovated and it reopened in 2007. Tours led by our professional mountain guides are available weekly. To make a reservation, call +41 081 920 92 00. Flyer historic pinut The Segnesboden Climbing Garden The climbing garden is situated in the majestic surroundings of the valley at an altitude of almost 2100 m. The stable limestone rock face is perfect for climbing, and the site has everything you could possibly need for a successful adventure in the mountains - apart from your own professional climbing kit of course. Swimming
A refreshing dip in the pleasantly cool waters - the lake is fed by underground streams - is especially enjoyable after a longer hike. Let your mind wander and your eye drift from the small island over the pine forest that almost completely surrounds the lake and back to the pier where a rented boat is perhaps just casting off.
Lake Cresta You won't regret choosing a bike trail that passes Lake Cresta. Approaching from Flims you will be taken aback by the natural beauty of Lake Cresta. It's not without reason that the blue-green water framed by the dense vegetation, embedded in a dark green circle of trees is one of the protected natural monuments of the Graubünden canton. The clear water simply invites you to take a refreshing dip or a romantic boat trip. After that you deserve refreshment in the nearby restaurant. Lake Laax ''Ils lags'' is Rhaeto-Romanic for ''the lakes''. In this respect the lake in the middle of the village played a substantial part in the naming of Laax. In summer the Laax lake promises a cool dip and a fun atmosphere. There is enough space for all the sun worshippers on the sun bathing area. A beach volleyball field and a boat rental invite you to get active in case you've still got some energy left after biking area. So much activity works up an appetite and the barbecue area is just the thing. What better way could there be to end the day with friends by the lakeside. Thermal baths and swimming pools If it's not the weather for swimming in the lakes, then you can enjoy your hotel's indoor or outdoor pool, or the indoor swimming pools in Laax or Chur, or maybe even the thermal baths in Vals. Thermal spring Vals River Rafting
The impressive Rhine Gorge between Illanz and Reichenau presents the perfect scenery for a wet and wonderful adventure. If river rafting were not already invented you’d have to do so for the Upper Rhine. Up to nine participants can board one of the sturdy rubber boats with multiple chambers. Together with an experienced guide, the group decides the pace. In quiet passages you will be taken to another world by the unusual rock formations of the gorge. And when you pass the rapids water spray and waves will ensure lots of fun in the boat. Ask for special family tours.
Mirasteilas Observatory
The largest telescope in Switzerland that is open to the public can be used to observe galaxies, Saturn, Jupiter and other planets. You have never seen them so closely! Take a look in the week before the Swiss O Week to see if the constellation of the stars promises you a SOW victory.
Buna Vista Golf Sagogn
Set at the same altitude as Sagogn and Schluein, 700 m above sea level, on a plateau overlooking the inlet of the Anterior Rhine, the Ruinaulta, holes 1 to 9 and 10 to 13, the driving range and the practice holes were opened in summer 2008. The sun-drenched golf course is nestled in a beautiful rural setting, designed to be very true to its natural surroundings, with a wonderful view over the mountains of Surselva. The challenges posed by the course include water obstacles, treacherous grassy bunkers, raised tees which are topographically unspoilt, the length of the holes and some sandy bunkers.

Rhine Gorge
What began with the Flims landslide presents itself today as a unique natural backdrop. Over the last 10,000 years, the Rhine has cut its path though the rocks between Illanz and Reichenau. A gorge has formed that deservedly carries the title Swiss Grand Canyon. The bizarre shapes of the rock formations framed by pine forests fascinate train passengers, hikers and river rafters from the whole world. UNESCO-world nature heritage The Swiss Tectonic Arena Sardona with the Glarner Rift was designated as unique in the world and has been on the UNESCO world heritage list since 8 July 2008. And with the impressive Tschingelhörner and Martinsloch, two further highlights can be found in Flims. Glarner Rift The geological fact that younger stone lies on older stone can only insufficiently explain the magic of the Glarner Rift. Tschingelhörner & Martinsloch The jagged spikes of the Tschingelhörner can hardly be overlooked. Twice a year, however, the lower lying Martinsloch steals the show. In March and in October the sun shines for a short time through the 19 m big hole and onto the church spire of Elm. A unique experience! |
